History

Winslow and District Gardening Society (W&DGS) was founded in 1975. It was originally called Winslow Gardeners and Allotments Society and for many years provided a range of gardening essentials from a shed located behind Norden House Surgery where there are now the houses along Park Road.

Membership in the 1980s reached a peak of about 190 and the Society’s Spring and Summer Shows attracted entries of a very high standard from Winslow residents and keen gardeners from surrounding villages. Over time, with the closure the Society’s gardening supplies shed and a reduction in those participating in the Shows, membership steadily declined to the extent that in 2013 an extraordinary meeting was called to determine whether the Society should continue, as its funds were almost exhausted. With the majority who attended the meeting agreeing that Winslow needed a Gardening Society, the current name was adopted and a change of emphasis in what the Society should provide was agreed.

Winslow and District Gardening Society now aims to provide at least six meetings a year with invited speakers, at least one visit to a garden or garden centre, a visit to a few gardens in Winslow and the December AGM and Social.

The Society’s major fund raising event is held on the first Sunday of June at the Winslow Farmers’ Market when we have a plant stall. Members provide the plants and produce we sell.
